Presenting AI Forecasting and Solar Risk Assessment at ESIG 2026

Our colleagues Lars and Peter from the Forecasting Key Acoounting team are attending the ESIG (Energy Systems Integration Group) Summer Workshops 2026 in Denver, Colorado, from June 15th-17th.

At this year's event, they are sharing insights into two key topics that are shaping the future of renewable energy forecasting: AI-driven forecasting and situational awareness for solar power plants in high-risk areas.

Enhancing Solar Risk Assessment with Situational Awareness

Peter's presentation focuses on the growing importance of situational awareness products for solar power plants in high-risk areas. As solar energy production continues to increase across North America, so does the need to better understand and manage the risks associated with extreme weather events.

To support customers in these situations, energy & meteo systems develops multiple scenarios that enable comprehensive risk assessments. Alongside continuous improvements in solar forecasting, we provide situational awareness products that help customers evaluate potential impacts through worst-case scenarios. Our current focus is on assessing the effects of wildfires and heavy snow events on tracked solar farms.

Explainable AI: Machine Learning in Forecasting

Lars will present our approach to machine learning in weather forecasting and discuss both its strengths and limitations. While AI weather models have achieved outstanding results in numerous international benchmark studies and often outperform traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, energy & meteo systems believes that transparency remains essential.

At ESIG, Lars will demonstrate why we rely on explainable machine learning in the early stages of forecasting and share the key insights we have gained from applying these methods in practice.

Through these presentations, we look forward to driving innovation and strengthening grid resilience together with the ESIG community.
