The Founders and Managing Directors

Wind Powered Entrepreneurial Spirit

Dr. Ulrich Focken (center in the photo) is Managing Director and Co-Founder of the companies energy & meteo systems, emsys VPP, and emsys grid services. He studied physics at the University of Oldenburg, where he specialized early on in the integration of renewable energies. His doctoral research focused on the development of the wind power forecasting system Previento, whose successful implementation in operational use laid the foundation for the establishment of energy & meteo systems in 2004.

As Managing Director, Ulrich Focken is now responsible for the day-to-day operations of all three companies. With vision and innovative strength, he continuously drives the creation of new products and solutions in the field of energy transition. Key milestones of his work include the development and successful integration of forward-looking initiatives such as the Virtual Power Plant and the IT platform for Redispatch 2.0 into the corporate group’s software portfolio.

He plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction while maintaining a close eye on international markets – with particular focus on North America and India. As a recognized expert in the analysis and design of various energy markets, he possesses in-depth knowledge of their respective business models and market mechanisms. With many years of experience, strong technical expertise, and strategic acumen, Ulrich Focken significantly contributes to the advancement of innovative solutions for a sustainable and intelligent energy future.

Dr. Matthias Lange
(left in the photo) is Managing Director and Co-Founder of the companies energy & meteo systems, emsys VPP, and emsys grid services. After studying physics at the universities of Oldenburg, Warwick (UK), and Marburg, he earned his doctorate as a scholarship holder of the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), focusing on the uncertainty of wind power forecasts – a research topic whose practical advancement played a key role in the founding of energy & meteo systems in 2004.

He was instrumental in the introduction of the wind power forecasting system Previento and has since been responsible for the technical implementation and successful realization of numerous customer projects for the emsys group in both domestic and international markets. In addition to the continuous development of forecasting systems in line with the evolving demands of the energy industry, he also oversees the group’s information security management system.

A particular focus of his work lies in coordinating international research and development projects – especially in Central and South America – where he actively promotes the integration of renewable energies. With his strong scientific and technical expertise, along with extensive international experience, Matthias Lange is one of the key drivers of innovative energy solutions and a valued partner in the development of sustainable energy systems.

Jan Rosenkranz
(right in the photo) is Managing Director of emsys grid services and has played a key role in shaping the development of the emsys group for many years. After studying physics at the University of Oldenburg – during which he was already working with energy & meteo systems – he began his career there and made significant contributions to technological advancements. Notable among his achievements are his pioneering work on the solar power forecasting system Suncast and on the  forecast of the vertical grid load, both of which set new standards in forecasting technology at an early stage. As team leader of the research department at energy & meteo systems, he spearheaded numerous innovations.

Since 2019, Jan Rosenkranz has led the implementation of IT solutions for Redispatch 2.0 – one of the central challenges of the energy transition in the grid sector. In this role, he manages complex processes involving multiple stakeholders on both the client and company sides.

With his move to emsys grid services, Jan Rosenkranz assumed new entrepreneurial responsibilities and has been part of the management team since December 2023. He also holds authorized signatory powers at energy & meteo systems and emsys VPP. With his many years of experience, deep technical expertise, and strong project management skills, he plays a key role in driving the digital transformation of electricity grids in the context of renewable energy integration.

Our Driving Force: Consistently Ecological

Ecological thinking has been with us from an early stage. Whether it was the first own wind turbine, demonstrating in front of nuclear power plants or the conviction that there is a solution for everything – even at a young age, all three managing directors were driven by the desire to change the energy industry and make it more in-line with the environment.

Even today, our entire portfolio is consistently geared towards the integration of renewable energies. In the process, we see our customers less as contracting entities and more as partners with which we can cooperate to arrive at an energy industry in accordance with nature. Since the beginning, we have persistently proceeded towards the goal of providing energy which is 100% from renewable energy sources!
