Battery Storage in Virtual Power Plant
New Opportunities in the Baltic Balancing Power Market
Since 2024, Ignitis, Lithuania’s largest electricity supplier, and emsys VPP have been working together to further develop the marketing of renewable energy in the Baltic electricity market. Operating in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Finland, Ignitis is an energy company serving both B2C and B2B customers with electricity and natural gas and implementing innovative solutions to promote energy efficiency. The Virtual Power Plant implemented by emsys VPP supports the direct marketing of Ignitis’s portfolio of around 650 MW and uses wind and solar power forecasts from energy & meteo systems to optimize trading activities.
By expanding the Virtual Power Plant to include balancing power capabilities, the partners are opening up new opportunities to use flexible assets to stabilize the electricity grid. The focus is on integrating battery energy storage systems, which are already being successfully traded on the intraday market and have recently begun to provide both automatic and manual Frequency Restoration Reserves (aFRR and mFRR).
The technical connection and prequalification of the battery storage systems, as well as their communication link to the power frequency controller operated by the transmission system operator Litgrid, form the basis for participation in the balancing power market
The result: The Virtual Power Plant combines the aggregation of renewable energy with the trading of flexible assets across electricity and balancing markets. This enables Ignitis and emsys VPP to make better use of the potential of battery storage systems while making an important contribution to the flexibility and stability of the Baltic electricity grid, which has been synchronized with the Continental European grid since February 2025.

About German Energy Solutions Initiative
With the aim of positioning German technologies and know-how worldwide, the German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) supports suppliers of climate-friendly energy solutions in opening up foreign markets. The focus lies on renewable energies, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage, as well as technologies such as power-to-gas and fuel cells. Aimed in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises, the German Energy Solutions Initiative supports participants through measures to prepare market entry as well as to prospect, develop and secure new markets.
About Renewable Energy Solutions Programme (RES Programme)
With the RES Programme, the German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) helps German companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors enter new markets. Within the framework of the programme, reference plants are installed and marketed with the support of the German Energy Agency (dena). Information and training activities help ensure a sustainable market entry and demonstrate the quality of climate-friendly technologies made in Germany.
